ITC Benguiat (pronounced Ben-gat) was designed in 1978 for the International Typeface Corporation. Its true origin, however, is a story of sheer stubbornness.
Ed Benguiat was fond of a few letterforms that were rejected by a client, and spent the next
several years
revising them. He eventually submitted it to the ITC Review board—
where it was promptly
rejected. Again.
He revised them, then tried again. This repeated three times before Benguiat's design was finally accepted, going on to become one of the most widely used typefaces of all time.
Funnily enough, the typeface no one wanted, became the typeface everyone wanted.
